Bamoun Tribe.
With the Bamoun tribe, art objects were symbols of position in the hierarchy; from the number of art pieces they had to the materials from which they were made. A large number of prestigious items were produced within the grassland area, which includes thrones, stools, and tables decorated with small heads and figures. This specific stool is made out of Mukua wood, which is a heavily exploited and endangered African hardwood.
This stool represents the pygmy tribe. They live in many areas of Africa ranging from the Congo to South Africa as well as from Central Africa to the Indian Ocean. An endangered tribe dating back 5000 years, their average height is 4′ to 4′11″ which is where the term pygmy comes from. Due to their Nomadic lifestyle, Pygmies live simplistically and do not make pottery, keep herds, nor till the earth.
