Fractional Currency
Fourth Issue.
At the advent of the Civil War there was rush and hoarding of hard (coin) currency, and thus making it impossible for a merchant to make change. In 1862, the government solved this problem with the first issue of Fractional Currency. For the next 14 years it was possible to have change in your pocket that did not rattle.
