This coin commemorates the Panama-Pacific International Exposition; the opening of the Panama Canal; and the rebirth of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake and fire. Dies for the 1915-S Panama-Pacific Gold Dollar were made privately at the expense of the Panama-Pacific Exposition, then sent to the Mint to strike the coins.
1915-S Panama-Pacific Gold Dollar. The obverse depicts a Panama canal worker with soft cloth cap while on the reverse there is a simple design composed of two dolphins above and below the denomination.
(Interestingly the Panama Canal laborer depicted on the obverse was widely mistaken for a baseball player.)
