Faience Ushabti

Pale Blue Faience With Nine Lines of Hieroglyphics.

The ancient Egyptians believed that in the afterlife they would be summoned to work in the fields. Consequently, they provided themselves with Ushabti figures to serve as substitutes to perform those tasks. Each Ushabti holds a pick in one hand and a hoe in the other, and bear the inscription “May he illuminated, The Osiris REDJY-M-HOTEP born of the woman MERYT”.
